Go For a Walk

When I started the walk I really didn’t thought that I would really notice something intriguing at the least. I'm usually on my smart phone, if I’m arriving at the university, walking to classes or leaving the university, either by looking at  social media or watching a new series on Netflix or Kiss anime. I love watching series or movies but now a days I’m more into series or to be more specific, anime series. When I’m really into a series I tend to binge watch it and there for I don’t really look at my surrounding, at least when I’m on campus. I know it’s not a smart decision, to be walking and not be aware of my surrounding believe me I'm aware. By doing this exercise I thought I might actually make it a thing in my life and stop being on my smart phone every change I get.
I decided to start after going to the Literary Contest and supporting Angela and Isabel on their wins. I started leaving the DMN building and taking my daily route to “Plaza Universitaria”, where my mother picks me up. Looking around my first thoughts were: okay this is going to be boring and you’re not going to see a thing that you don’t know of by now or something different. As I went on a little hill track that I always take I started noticing things like how there where less trees than when I started the first semester. I also saw a group of people that get together to sing and praise God, which I find really positive since I’ve always loved those type of songs and I don’t know really why or how but they always leave me feeling warm, happy and in a chill mood. Then as I was getting to the end of the little hill I looked over at “Servicios Medicos” and noticed that there is a big paper saying that they are not there anymore. Good to know in case I have an emergency or something don't waste my time walking on the wrong direction.
By know I was mid walk from my destination and I saw a new planted tree, it looked so cute compared to all the big ones that surrounded it; there is this building in one of the photos I took that resembles a typical Puerto Rican restaurant near the beach and I thought it looked so cool.  I also so a small building that had a little patio at the back and remembered learning that it was first designed to be the dean’s house. Right in front to that building there is a big “bohío” under reconstruction. At this point I’ve seen such cool and cute things and I’m near my end point and I notice an old broken phone stand, keep walking and see a light post with the words Chibi, and it made me laugh because I just saw a anime series where one of the protagonist is named Chibiusa. I saw a bright yellow beautiful vintage style bike that really standout because of the gray color of the background wall and also for the first time looked at the entrance of the museum where in it stands a big wooded art monument. Finally, I looked at a tree, that I remembered when arriving my first day at college thinking it was pretty big but after María it is smaller on the top and barely has the half of what it used to have of leaves.
I think we all need to look more and not just look observe our surroundings because there is so much things we take for granted. Or just the simple beauty of things and the potential they may have if you just look closely; like the little second floor building that resembles a restaurant, maybe it can be used as a little reading place and coffee shop for the professors and students on campus to relax and do their work on a more unformal looking place, a chill space. I ended up loving this exercise and will for sure always look at the things I’ve mentioned and also for new and different things.

  1. I like the way you were able to perceive the beauty of even the most everyday things. I've always felt that looking at things that way helps create optimism within oneself.
